Acceptance is the First Step to Moving On

Life is all about change. Sometimes life can throw lots at us which can change everything and anything in an instant.

As we age and experience all life has to offer it will change us. Everyday I work with people who do not like where they are at and sometimes are very desperate to change. One of the quickest ways to change anything is to first of all accept exactly where you are at.

Identify, today exactly where you are at, what is bugging you, what is hurting you, what is causing you pain, what do you not like about yourself and or perhaps your life? Accept, right now this moment that is the way things are…Accept it, just say, okay I accept it.

Now, ask yourself, what can you do about it?

Accepting does not mean you have to like it, accepting is knowing and recognising and acknowledging exactly where you are at. Now, when you know exactly what it is, it will be so much easier to get to where you want to go. How can you get to point B, if you have no idea what point A looks like or feels like or what it is which you do not like.  Sometimes there is absolutely nothing we can do, sometimes it may be an act of God or force of nature but we can always change how we see things and how we think and what our attitude towards the issue is… let me give you an example.

Many people do not like who they are or what they look like because they are overweight. Wishing you were slimmer or looked differently or eating rubbish instead of something healthy or sitting on the sofa instead of exercising will not change anything only make the problem worse. If you are tired and do not have the energy or ability to do all you want to do, accept it, accept the little bit of energy you do have, accept it for this moment and avoid comparing yourself to previously perhaps or what you yearn for… be patient!

Here is a beautiful reflection by Regina Hill which sums it all up

“Acceptance means that you can find the serenity within to let go of the past with its mistakes and regrets, and move into the future with a new perspective, appreciating the opportunity to take a second chance.

Acceptance means you’ll find security again when difficult times come into your life, and comfort to relieve any pain. You’ll find new dreams, fresh hopes, and forgiveness of the heart.

Acceptance does not mean that you will always be perfect. It simply means that you’ll always overcome imperfection.

Acceptance is the road to peace – letting go of the worst, holding on to the best, and finding the hope inside that continues throughout life.

Acceptance is the heart’s best defence, love’s greatest asset, and the easiest way to keep on believing in yourself and others.”

Today, accept where you are at and embrace every moment of it to help you move forward in leaps and bounds.
